Franklin Delano Roosevelt Interview
A few days ago I had a chance to interview Franklin D. Roosevelt about World War II and how it had started. I asked Roosevelt about the causes of WWII and he said it was mainly because of the rise of dictators in the countries of Soviet Union, Germany and Italy. Roosevelt said the war started because these countries started to take over their neighboring countries. Ruled by Benito Mussolini, Italy conquered Ethiopia in 1935. Japan under the control of Hirohito took over China, Korea, and French Indo-China. Roosevelt said that Versailles treaty was too weak and Hitler was able to build up his army and the League of Nations also did nothing to stop him. He also states that after a failed appeasement from Britain and France, Germany was able to take over Poland and this caused Britain and France to declare war on Germany thus starting WWII.
I asked Roosevelt about the Versailles Treaty and how it affected the war and he said that the treaty was a failure. Roosevelt said that the Versailles Treaty should have been stronger and made sure that Germany was not able to build up its army and come back to power. When I asked him about the League of Nations he said that became another failed attempt. The League of Nations was made in order to ease tensions between countries and to decrease the chance of wars however whenever countries were being taken over the League of Nations did little or nothing to help.
I asked Franklin about how the United States viewed Hitler and he said that the United States viewed Hitler as a criminal. We felt as if he did not belong in power and that he was just a sick and cruel man. Roosevelt said the qualities he had were not that of a leader, a leader is supposed to be wise, strong, courageous, and resourceful. Hitler however was just the opposite and on top of all that he was a coward and when he committed suicide America rejoiced.
Finally I asked Roosevelt why it took so long for the United States to join the war. Roosevelt said that he wanted the United States to remain neutral so he created the Neutrality Act of 1935 which forbade us from supplying any goods to countries at war. He also said he created the Good Neighbor Policy to ease any tensions with Latin American countries. We thought we would not enter the war however when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor we knew we couldn’t just sit around and do nothing so we were forced to enter the war.
